Huntsville Maternity Photographer

Huntsville, AL maternity photographer Ellen Adams Photography captured this image of a pregnant mom.

As a Huntsville maternity photographer, the BIGGEST regret that I hear from new moms is NOT having maternity portraits. You quickly forget how beautiful your big belly was- although right now it may feel heavy and uncomfortable. You and your body deserve to be celebrated in a gorgeous maternity photoshoot that you can look back on and cherish.

This gorgeous mama is expecting her first baby! Kati was unsure at first if she wanted to do maternity photos, but she wants to remember how beautiful it is to carry her precious baby boy.

Kati married her husband in 2018 and planned to have her big wedding in March of 2020, but the world changed and they had to put those plans on hold.

Madison AL maternity photographer Ellen Adams Photography captured this image of a goose next to a pregnant mom.

However, at the end of May, we got to celebrate their beautiful baby boy on the way with a maternity photo shoot. The geese wanted to join in on the fun, too!

Ellen Adams Photography photographed the silhouette of a pregnant mom.

Kati found out that she was pregnant the day after Thanksgiving 2019, and a few days shy of her husband’s first deployment.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better way of sending him off on deployment.”

Huntsville, AL maternity Photographer Ellen Adams Photography captured this fine art portrait of a pregnant mom waiting for her husband to come home from deployment overseas.

Currently, Kati is awaiting the safe return of her husband from his second deployment overseas.

“My one piece of wisdom for my baby boy, to carry through life, is to cherish life for everything it has to offer. Love everything about it and everyone who comes into your life. Never regret a thing that happens as it only gives you experience. And strive to always do better.”

Madison, AL photographer Ellen Adams Photography captured this joyful photo of a pregnant mom.

I love getting to know my clients better, and I love what Kati told me:

“My hopes for Lucas are that he grows up to be a strong man who loves family. My hopes are that he is successful in whatever he chooses to do, and that he never regrets a single thing that he may go through.”

As a Huntsville maternity photographer, I also love when clients tell me about their children’s excitement when looking at portraits of “When I was in Mommy’s belly.”

Breastfeeding Food Guide

Breastfeeding food guide to help new moms prevent colic in their newborn babies.

My 5th tip to Help Your Baby “Sleep Like a Baby” is to be careful what your baby eats. Whether you nurse, use formula, or do a combination of the two, feeding a newborn can be stressful.

Are they getting enough? Are they crying because they are still hungry? Is the breast milk or formula upsetting their tummy?

Every single baby is unique in their own way.

I always suggest consulting your Pediatrician with any concerns.

If you’re nursing, you may find that some foods you eat don’t agree with your baby. A baby with an upset or gassy tummy usually is very uncomfortable and unable to sleep well.

For this reason, I recommend that moms keep a bland diet 48 hours before your photo shoot and that you eat comfort foods, such as bread, potatoes and whole grains to keep your baby comfortable.

(If you are using formula, try not to change which formula you are using during this time, as long as your baby is happy and your doctor hasn’t told you to change.)

After your session, you are welcome to choose any diet you wish; however, there are certain foods and drinks that can lead to gas in newborns.

Below is a list of common foods suggested to avoid while nursing newborns. This list was written by a Pediatrician and given to me while I was pregnant with my first baby.

These foods typically affect babies under 6 weeks. As they get older, reintroduce foods one at a time to see how they are accepted. Please use this list at your own discretion and consult your doctor as needed.

Breastfeeding Food Guide

Avoid Acidic Foods and Drinks such as:

  • Cranberries
  • Pineapple
  • Grapefruit
  • Oranges
  • Lemons
  • Strawberries
  • All berries
  • Tomatoes and tomato products
  • Chocolate (rarely affects babies)
  • Peanuts-nuts in general
  • Pizza
  • Spaghetti
  • Chilli
  • Tacos/Spicy/Mexican Foods/Salsa
  • Ketchup

Avoid Gassy Vegetables such as:

  • Asparagus
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Cucumbers/pickles
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Cabbage

Restrict Drinks such as:

  • Soda (particularly caffeinated)
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Wine & Beer

Check with your Doctor to see if Dairy is an issue.

Too much pepper can irritate your baby’s stomach too, so that’s why I suggest you avoid chicken in your take-out orders and stick to bland beef if you’re having restaurant food.

Getting your baby on the right formula and identifying foods that don’t agree with your baby may take a little bit of time. Once you figure it out, you and your baby will be happier.

I wrote a whole article on 5 Take-Out Places in Huntsville that are Good for the Anti-Colic Diet, since I know cooking your own meals or having a friend cook for you is not always an option during the haze of the newborn days.

(It is very important to understand that I believe in baby led newborn sessions, which means that I never force or deny a feeding. Newborns should be fed before the session starts, but if your baby is hungry, there is plenty of time to stop and feed them. Sometimes babies get extra hungry during their session, and I want you to take care of your baby.)

Why I Never Feel Guilty About Easter Baskets

Some families don’t want to do Easter baskets on Easter to make sure that they don’t take away from the true meaning of Easter. Personally, my family’s Easter tradition ensured I never had a problem with understanding what Easter was all about as a kid, while still enjoying my Easter basket on Easter morning.

Why I never feel guilty about Easter baskets on Easter morning.

Today, I was Very excited to pass down my family’s tradition to my sons.

Easter Basket Scavenger Hunts!

Our kids hunt for their Easter baskets by having a scavenger hunt with Bible story clues!

Easter morning scavenger hunt.

My eldest isn’t quite old enough to read the clues yet, but he knows enough Bible stories that we were able to read the clues to him, and he figured out where he was suppose to go next on his own.

Clue for scavenger hunt.

The first clue led him to our fruit stash. (You could include any of the verses about fruit for this one. We told him about John 15:4, “No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”

Easter scavenger hunt around the house.

My eldest knew what Pilate did at Jesus’s trial, because we had just talked about that earlier in the week in his Holy Week coloring book.

Scavenger hunt

Jesus washing his disciples’ feet was another story we had discussed in his coloring book earlier in the week.

For his last clue, I made him hunt a little bit. We wash his feet in the bathtub, but his basket wasn’t hidden in the bathtub right next to that sink.

We put his basket in his bathroom upstairs. So, it was fun watching him running around the house, smiling and excited to find his prize.

We put little brother’s basket with it, because we knew he would want to follow along wherever big brother went!

As I grew up, the clues became harder and eventually I started receiving Bible verses I had to go look up myself instead of the fill in the blank verses.

You can make it as hard or as easy as you want to!

I hope you will consider adding this to your Easter morning tradition, and Stop feeling guilty about doing Easter baskets on Easter morning. There’s no reason it has to detract from the true Easter Story.

HAPPY EASTER!

Update from 5 years later…..

Pretty much as soon as Christmas was done this year, our kids were telling us how they couldn’t wait for Easter Basket Scavenger Hunt time! (From what they’ve said- I think they might like the hunt even more than their baskets.)

We are currently very grateful for the Easter Basket Scavenger Hunt clues you can purchase from various Etsy stores to print, cut out, and hide in appropriate places, such as this one.

(My dad would would’ve saved so much time if he had this!)

Relax Your Baby With This Tip

My next tip to Help Your Baby “Sleep Like a Baby” is to Relax! You are doing a Great Job!

Your instincts will help you a lot as a parent, and reading extra advice, in those spare moments while rocking your baby, is an added bonus.

(Of course, please ask your baby’s pediatrician every question you can think of during your baby’s check-ups, because they know best!)

Newborn photographer in Huntsville, AL gives tips on how to relax your baby during your newborn pictures.

When parents have me over for a Newborn Photo Shoot, I want them to be nice and relaxed.

Newborns generally respond to your energy, and therefore, the more relaxed and comfortable you are, the more likely they will be relaxed and ready to sleep during their session.

Tip # 4: Relax Yourself

The same is true at other times, too.

It’s normal, especially for first-time parents, to feel a little bit anxious and to second guess yourself.

Take a deep breath and trust that your instincts are good, and that you are doing an amazing job taking care of your baby. You and your baby will be happier because of it.

Many parents worry that their babies may not sleep through their newborn session. Well, that’s not a problem!

Relax your baby with this tip from Newborn Photographer Ellen Adams.

I’ve photographed babies that are wide awake the entire time. We can usually still achieve some amazing images, especially if they are wrapped.

You also don’t have to worry about crying. Babies are babies, and they will cry. I do everything I can to soothe and comfort them, and to surround them with a comfortable environment.

I want your Newborn Session to be a treasured memory, and I will do everything I can to make it relaxing and enjoyable.

Tip #2: Your Baby’s Talking to You

Tip #3: Shh!

Tip #5: Stress Free Feedings

Shh! Help Your Baby Sleep

Instinctively, we all know to say “Shh” when we want quiet. There’s no need to feel rude if you say it to your baby, because your newborn will find it comforting! Repetitive “shh, shh” sounds mimic the sounds your baby heard when he was inside your body. It mimics the sound of blood whooshing through your blood vessels.

Picture of a newborn baby's ear by Ellen Adams Photography.

Experienced moms seem to really have this down. During a newborn session, I will hear moms repeating “shh, shh” to their baby as they snuggle.

Then, the moms get an excited and relieved look when I pull out my Baby Shusher.

Tip #3: Use a White Noise Machine

They’ve made a device that will say the shushing for you! I used it with my second baby, and it worked like a charm. So, I make sure to bring it with me for every newborn session.

There’s a whole world of white noise machines out there, and I have several that I like to use for my babies and for newborn sessions. This is just one that is especially useful during baby’s “Fourth Trimester,” when he is getting use to his new environment.

Take a look around at all of the white noise machine options out there, and have fun exploring the possibilities!

6 Month Baby Pictures

Your First Baby Plan Session marks the time when your baby is sitting up on his own, but not quite on the go. Personality is coming out in so many ways, along with giggles, coos, and an insatiable curiosity about the world.

This session is usually held at 6-8 months old and celebrates the milestone of sitting all on his own!

Inspiration for your 6 month baby pictures, created by Ellen Adams Photography in Huntsville, AL.

Here are 3 Tips to prepare for your baby’s First Baby Plan Session at 6-8 months old:

Tip #1: Dress in Solids

I love that this little man is in a white outfit. Solids photograph better than patterns and are more timeless. I always suggest solids in neutrals or light colors for sessions.

When you choose neutral or light solids, it helps bring all the attention to your baby’s face and his lovely smile!

Tip #2: Rise and Shine

Schedule your 6 month baby pictures around your child’s nap time. You want your baby feeling fresh and happy.

Mornings are typically when babies are at their best.

I will come during your baby’s morning nap to setup my studio, in whichever room you have that is wide-open and doesn’t have carpet. That way, I can be all set to go when your baby is up from his nap and at his happiest.

Tips #3: Nap time Attire

Speaking of naps, have your baby nap in a loose onesie or at least extra loose pajamas to avoid indentations on his skin.

I will never post naked baby bottom pictures online (for baby’s privacy), but you have the option of including those pictures during this session.

Here are just a few of the images I included for this handsome little man’s Expressions Panel. Cherish those chubby faces! The Expressions Panel highlights the bubbling personality of your baby in a 9 part collage. Capture the love, laughter, and even the serious faces your child exudes.

Crying or Communicating? The A-Z Guide of Newborn Baby Cries

My 2nd tip to help your baby Sleep Like a Baby, is to learn your newborn’s language. Your baby is talking to you! Newborns have their own language with their newborn cries, and if you can master it, you can help your baby be more comfortable. And really, these tips are all about making baby more comfortable, so that your baby can sleep better and you can too.

My husband and I found ourselves at our wit’s end lying down on the floor of our first child’s nursery. Our newborn was lying next to us crying. He had been crying and crying. We had tried this, we had tried that. We were going through our mental checklist trying to figure out what he needed.

Then it dawned on me- my poor baby was crying because he was hungry. In my sleep deprived state, I had forgotten that it had been a little while since he’d eaten (perhaps because it didn’t feel like that long ago to me, since newborns eat all the time).

Tips for calming a crying baby from a Huntsville AL Newborn Photographer, Ellen Adams Photography

Tip #2: Learn to Interpret Baby Cries:

By the time I had my second baby; however, I had learned that newborns have their own little language. So, whenever he cried, I knew what he needed. He seemed to trust me more than my first baby, and he was a much happier and more laid back baby.

The Language of Newborn Baby Cries: What are They Trying to Tell Us?

Think about your baby’s cry as their way of communicating! When you do, you’ll start to notice that not all their little cries are the same.

“I’m Hungry”

A newborn’s hungry cry is a low-pitched, rhythmic, and repetitive cry that sounds like “wah wah wah”. The cry is often accompanied by other signals, such as:

● Rooting for the breast
● Sucking motions with the tongue
● Lip-smacking
● Putting fingers into the mouth

The sound “neh” is created when a baby’s tongue touches the roof of their mouth, which creates a sucking reflex. The sound is similar to a lamb bleating.

Other signs that a baby is hungry include:

● Moving fists to the mouth
● Turning the head to look for the breast
● Becoming more alert and active
● Sucking on hands or lip smacking

It’s important to respond to hunger cries immediately.

“I’m Sleepy”

A newborn’s sleep cry sounds like, “owh”. This sound is created when the baby yawns and exhales.

Baby cries and what they mean by Huntsville, AL newborn photographer Ellen Adams.

“I’m in Pain”

A newborn’s pain cry is high-pitched, piercing, and grating. It can start without warning and be long, loud, and shrill. The cry may be followed by a big pause, as if the baby is holding their breath.

“I’m Overstimulated”

A newborn’s overstimulated cry sounds similar to a tired cry, which is long and hard. The cry is usually not as loud as other cries and often staccato. Overstimulation can escalate to shrieking.

Other signs of overstimulation include:

● Avoiding eye contact
● Constant head turning
● Flailing arms and legs
● Turning their head away from you or other stimuli
● Batting angrily at objects

To soothe an overstimulated baby, you can try:

● Removing yourself from the environment
● Dimming the lights
● Rocking the baby
● Shushing
● Singing softly to them

If your baby is crying in a way that sounds different from their normal cry, and/or their crying is continuous, it may be a signal that they are in some sort of pain or discomfort.

“I’m gassy”

Often accompanied by the baby pulling up their legs or arching their back. This cry can sound grunty or strained.

How to help a gassy baby by Huntsville Newborn Photographer Ellen Adams Photography.

Tips for Calming a Crying Newborn:

Once you’ve identified the reason for your baby’s cry, you can start addressing their needs.

Here are some tried and tested methods:

Skin-to-Skin Contact:

Babies often find comfort in the familiar smell and warmth of their parents. Holding your baby close can offer them reassurance.

Shushing Sounds:

Mimic the noise of the womb by whispering a repetitive ‘shush’ close to your baby’s ear.

Swinging and Rocking:

Gentle movement can be comforting for babies. Make sure their head and neck are supported.

Pacifiers:

For some babies, sucking is soothing. If breastfeeding, it’s recommended to introduce a pacifier after breastfeeding is well-established.

Changing the Environment:

Sometimes, a change of scene, like a dimly lit room or some fresh air, can make a difference.

Humming or Singing:

Your voice is a familiar comfort to your baby. Softly singing or humming can be soothing.

When I had my first baby, my mom shared with me that singing the “Shortenin’ Bread” song would always calm me down when I was upset as a baby. So, I tried it with my own baby and it worked! See if there was a special song your mom would sing to you when you were a baby.

Remember, each baby is unique. What works for one might not work for another. It’s a process of trial and error.

Attending to a constantly crying baby can be stressful. Remember to breathe deeply and take short breaks if needed. Sometimes, just stepping out for a few minutes to compose yourself can do wonders. Your calm will also help soothe your baby.

Priscilla Dunstan has all sorts of resources for new moms to learn their baby’s language at dunstanbaby.com.

I wish I had known this secret for my first baby, but at least now I can help you!

(Remember, every baby is unique! While this article offered valuable insights, always trust your instincts and consult with a pediatrician.)

It takes time to understand your baby’s cries fully. With love, patience, and practice, you’ll soon be fluent in your baby’s unique language!

I hope reading Crying or Communicating? The A-Z Guide of Newborn Baby Cries has given you some solid ideas! If you’re still looking for a Huntsville, AL Newborn Photographer Photographer, click here to see my portfolio of Newborn Pictures.

5 Tips for Helping Your Baby “Sleep Like a Baby”

I will never forget the first time a mom told me I could come over any time, because she had never seen her newborn baby sleep as well as the day I came over for his newborn session!

The more sleep your newborn gets, the more sleep you can get, and you both need all the sleep you can get. So, I will be sharing 5 tips for helping your baby “sleep like a baby” over the next few weeks.

Tip #1: Swaddle

newborn baby pictures in Huntsville AL

After the nurses are done weighing and measuring your new baby, what do they do?

Swaddle.

The hospital nurses help you swaddle your baby when it’s time for your baby to sleep.

Nurses swaddle babies to help keep the startle reflex (Moro reflex) from waking themselves up.

Also, the hospital nurses tell you to remove the swaddle to help your newborn wake up enough to eat during breastfeeding or bottle time.

So, why would you stop swaddling once you get home?

Newborn photography in Huntsville, AL image of baby wrapped in gray swaddle

I was so exhausted with my first baby that I didn’t realize that a lot of easy swaddling devices have an option for leaving your baby’s arms out. Sometimes you will have a baby who absolutely hates having their hands tucked in. There are lots of positions for baby’s hands while swaddling. Don’t give up! (I wish I hadn’t with my first, and I was so glad I was a better swaddler with my second!)

Check with your pediatrician that you are swaddling correctly to avoid hip dysplasia.  Thankfully, a lot of the easy swaddles and sacks will help you swaddle correctly.

Another great thing about swaddling: there are transitional swaddles and then there are sleep sacks.

I have found sleep sacks are Amazing at keeping young toddlers from being able to climb out of their crib. Yay!

Huntsville Hospital will usually send you home with an easy swaddle like the Halo swaddle/sleep sack. (Note: I do NOT include affiliate links, because I believe advice is best freely given.)

I love photographing babies swaddled, especially when I am photographing them with siblings and family portraits. That way, it doesn’t matter if baby is awake- they will look calm and peaceful because they are relaxed by the comforting swaddle that mimics mama’s womb.

Vintage Baby Photoshoot

Vintage baby photoshoot by Ellen Adams Photography in Huntsville, AL of a sitter milestone session.

For this first Baby Plan session, I created a vintage baby photoshoot by adding a classic bonnet and a beautiful matching knit blanket.

Also, I included a doll bed my grandfather made for me when I was a little girl.

Simple, elegant details can elevate your portraits to heirloom pieces that you will want your great-grandchildren to find some day.

I love when moms tell me they were drawn to my photography because of its timelessness. Part of how I achieve a classic look is by keeping my backdrops and props fairly neutral and staying away from props that are too trendy.

Hays Nature Preserve Family Portraits

Family picture at Hays Nature Preserve in Huntsville, AL by Ellen Adams Photography.

When a family books their family portraits with me, one of the locations I always suggest is the Hays Nature Preserve. Kids change so much, especially during the early years. That’s why so many families like to do annual family pictures. This family wanted to capture their daughter’s fun and sweet personality, and they wanted to create some memories of life as a family of three before becoming a family of four.

For most of my family and maternity sessions, outdoor, open-air environments are always my first choice. I love shooting in wide-open natural spaces because the light is divine, especially during golden hour. (I do things differently for babies to protect them from things like being too hot or cold, sunburn, and such with their delicate skin.)

I love to take some posed pictures during a family or maternity session, but I also love to capture you interacting as a family and enjoying each other. Your personalities and beauty should be the focus of the session. I want your photos to be natural and timeless.

My goal is simple: for your session to be as fun and stress-free as possible! At the end of the day, the location you choose and the outfits you wear won’t matter nearly as much as the fun we have together and the memories you make.

However, I sure do love the wide-open spaces at the Hays Nature preserve for your little ones to run around and for you to play together.
